ISLAMABAD – The implementation of substantial taxes has resulted in increased prices of smartphones in Pakistan. However, the government has taken a recent step to enable buyers to temporarily register their devices.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif launched the Online Temporary Mobile Phone Registration system, allowing mobile phone users to register their devices without having to pay customs duties.
This new system is accessible to overseas Pakistanis and foreign nationals, permitting them to use their phones while visiting Pakistan. Foreign nationals can enjoy a complimentary registration period of 3 months during each visit.
The initiative primarily targets students studying abroad, foreign labor, and international tourists or business visitors to Pakistan.
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT), and Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) officials advised the government on this initiative, with the aim of enhancing connectivity facilities for visitors.
The IT Minister affirmed the government's commitment to providing seamless services across Pakistan and ensuring easy and convenient connectivity for all overseas Pakistanis and foreign nationals visiting the country.
Additionally, the national telecom authority introduced various consumer-centric initiatives and regulatory measures to ensure the provision of high-quality ICT services throughout Pakistan.
